The Kremlin responded harshly on Wednesday to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent demand for nuclear weapons, calling it “bordering on madness.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denounced Zelenskyy’s remarks, which were made in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, where the Ukrainian president suggested that Kyiv should be provided with nuclear arms if its NATO membership process is delayed. Peskov emphasized that there is an international non-proliferation regime in place, underlining that such requests go against global norms.
In his interview, Zelenskyy expressed doubt about NATO’s ability to guarantee Ukraine’s security and questioned whether the West would provide Ukraine with sufficient nuclear weapons to counter Russia. He argued that while it’s uncertain whether NATO will grant Ukraine membership in the near future, nuclear weapons could serve as a deterrent against Russian aggression.
