EU Resumes Its Mission at the Rafah Border Crossing

BRUSSELS, January 31, 2025 – The European Union (EU) has reactivated its civilian monitoring mission at the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, a vital entry and exit point for the Palestinian territory. This announcement was made by Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Friday.

Last Monday, Kallas remarked that there was widespread agreement among the foreign ministers of member states regarding the potential for the EU Border Assistance Mission to play a “decisive role” in supporting the ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and the Zionist entity.

“The EU’s civilian border mission deploys today to the Rafah Crossing… It will support Palestinian border personnel and allow the transfer of individuals out of Gaza, including those who need medical care,” she shared on social media.

An EU civilian mission tasked with monitoring the crossing began operations in 2005 but was suspended in June 2007.
