DR Congo Investigates 12 Possible Ebola Cases (CDC Africa)

KINSHASA, January 31, 2025 – Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are currently investigating 12 potential cases of Ebola in the northwestern region of the country, as announced by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) on Thursday.

The Center reported that the cases under investigation include seven fatalities and are situated in Equateur province, an area where tropical forests act as a natural reservoir for the virus responsible for causing fever, pain, and diarrhea.

“I hope we do not confirm this outbreak, as it would be devastating for the country,” stated Jean Kaseya, Director-General of CDC Africa, while addressing journalists regarding the suspected cases in the Congo.

The DRC has faced more than a dozen Ebola outbreaks in the past, including one from 2018 to 2020 that resulted in nearly 2,300 deaths, marking the second-highest death toll from the hemorrhagic fever recorded to date.

To the northeast, Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak in its capital, Kampala, on Thursday, reporting one related death.
