Iran Calls on IAEA to Focus on Technical Cooperation Over Politicization of Nuclear Issue

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to refrain from adopting a politicized and unconstructive stance on the Iranian nuclear issue, instead focusing on technical cooperation with Iran. Araghchi made these comments during a phone conversation with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on Wednesday, during which they discussed the ongoing interactions between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog.

Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to continue cooperation with the IAEA in accordance with its international obligations, emphasizing that the agency should avoid politicization and unjust pressure from some countries. He called for cooperation to take place in a “technical atmosphere,” free from external pressures.

In response, Grossi confirmed the IAEA’s intention to engage in serious cooperation with Iran, expressing his commitment to holding negotiations with all parties involved to resolve the remaining issues. This follows the IAEA Board of Governors’ resolution in November 2024, which accused Iran of “non-compliance” with its safeguards obligations.

Iran rejected this resolution, labeling it unjust and politically motivated, pointing out that its nuclear sites had undergone extensive inspections by the IAEA.
