Greenland Opposes US Territory Status, Survey Shows

A recent poll conducted in Greenland reveals that 85% of the population opposes the idea of the island becoming a US territory. The survey, conducted by Verian polling firm for Greenland’s national newspaper Sermitsiaq and Danish media outlet Berlingske, was carried out in response to US President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that Greenland should be acquired by the United States.

The poll found that only 6% of respondents supported the idea of Greenland becoming part of the US, while the overwhelming majority, 85%, rejected it. Trump’s interest in Greenland, due to its strategic location and mineral resources, has sparked tensions with Denmark. On December 23, 2024, Trump reiterated on his Truth Social account that the US should control Greenland, calling its ownership an “absolute necessity.” Since his inauguration, Trump has continued to claim that all 57,000 residents of Greenland want to join the US.

Greenland, a territory under Danish sovereignty since 1953, has previously rejected Trump’s offers to purchase the island. Tensions over the issue have escalated, with reports indicating that Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had a tense phone call, leaving Copenhagen officials deeply concerned about the potential for further US pressure on the matter.
