Algerian Army General Saïd Chanegriha Meets with AFRICOM Commander

Algerian Army General Saïd Chanegriha, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), welcomed Army General Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (US-AFRICOM), on Wednesday at the ANP headquarters, as noted in a communiqué from the Ministry of National Defense.

According to the report, “Army General Saïd Chanegriha held an audience on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the ANP headquarters with Army General Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command.”

The welcome ceremony commenced with a salute to the national flag, followed by military honors presented to General Langley by a formation of various ANP forces.

During the meeting, which included the Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Defense, Force Commanders, department heads, central directors from both the Ministry of National Defense and the ANP staff, as well as members of the American delegation, both parties discussed “the state of bilateral military cooperation and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest,” according to the same source.

Following this, Army General Chanegriha delivered a speech in which he welcomed the AFRICOM Commander and his accompanying delegation. He also congratulated the American people on the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States.

“It is my pleasure to welcome you to Algeria and take this opportunity to express my best wishes for the new year, which we hope will bring to fruition all our aspirations for success, security, peace, and progress around the world,” he stated.

“I also wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to you and the friendly American people on the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States, Mr. Donald Trump, while reiterating our desire to strengthen bilateral relations across various fields, including defense and security,” he added.

“Furthermore, we want to assure the United States, both government and people, of our deep sympathy and solidarity following the recent wildfires that have affected the State of California, causing significant material and human damage. We also wish a swift recovery to those injured,” he continued.

General Chanegriha emphasized “the depth of historical relations between our two countries and expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum currently characterizing bilateral military cooperation.”

“The partnership between our two countries is experiencing positive dynamics across various sectors, including defense and security. This dynamic reflects our commitment to advancing this partnership to new heights in service of the interests of both nations,” he indicated.

“In this regard, we commend the excellence of Algerian-American military relations, which are founded on rationality, pragmatism, and constructive dialogue aimed at establishing a sustainable partnership,” he mentioned.

For his part, Army General Michael Langley expressed “satisfaction with his visit to Algeria and a strong desire to enhance military cooperation relations. He also praised the level of multidimensional coordination between the two parties and acknowledged the contribution of the ANP to establishing security and peace in the region,” the communiqué highlighted.

According to a statement from APS, a memorandum of understanding was signed to establish military cooperation between the Ministry of National Defense of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria and the Department of Defense of the United States of America.
