Algeria Chairs Security Council Meeting on Situation in Middle East

NEW YORK – Appointed by Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf will chair on Monday, in New York, the meeting of Security Council devoted to discuss “the situation in the Middle East and Palestinian question.”

This meeting, which will mark the opening of the quarterly debate on the issue at the UN Security Council, will be marked by the participation of the organization’s Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, who is expected to deliver a speech.

The ceasefire agreement between the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, and the Zionist entity, which came into effect on Sunday, January 19, is expected to be a central point of the meeting.

During Monday’s public debate, Guterres and the Council’s members are expected to welcome the ceasefire agreement and urge both parties to commit, in good faith, to fully and swiftly implement it.

Algeria, which has consistently worked within the Security Council for the adoption of a resolution demanding a permanent and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, devastated by months of genocidal Zionist aggression, is expected to reiterate its call for the full implementation of the agreement.

It is also expected to stress the importance of lifting all restrictions and obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and to demand a complete withdrawal of Zionist occupation forces from Palestinian territories.

Although Algeria expressed its “satisfaction” with the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip in a statement, it nevertheless considered that this agreement constitutes a “partial” response to the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

This response must be “complemented by other steps for the reconstruction and unification of Palestinian territories, as well as by the opening of concrete prospects for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state as a just, lasting, and definitive solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, a prerequisite for restoring security and stability throughout the Middle East region,” it reacted upon the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza.

At the end of December, in a speech before Parliament, convened in congress, President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said that Algeria would never abandon Palestine and would support it until the establishment of a state, with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Monday’s meeting will be an opportunity for Algeria, which chairs the Security Council for the month of January, to call for an end to the occupation and the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
