India summoned Bangladesh’s deputy high commissioner, Nural Islam, on Monday amid escalating tensions over the ongoing border fencing dispute in Sukdevpur, Malda. This move follows a meeting between Indian diplomat Pranay Verma and Bangladeshi authorities to discuss border security cooperation.
The situation escalated when India’s Border Security Force (BSF) faced objections from Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB) while attempting to install barbed wire fencing in the region. The project was halted after a flag meeting between the two forces.
India and Bangladesh have maintained regular communication regarding border security, with an understanding to secure the border through fencing.
However, Bangladesh’s home affairs adviser, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, blamed the ongoing tensions on “unequal agreements” signed by the previous government, which he claims caused complications along the border. Despite brief resumption of the fencing project, the work has been suspended following the flag meeting.
