South Korea Holds Security Council Meeting Over North Korea’s Missile Launch

South Korea convened its security council on Monday following a missile launch by North Korea, according to local media reports citing authorities.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) suggested that the missile might have been a hypersonic type. They noted similarities to North Korea’s intermediate-range missiles equipped with hypersonic warheads launched in January and April last year, although this latest missile reportedly had a shorter range, Yonhap News Agency reported.

This development comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the region. In late 2024, North Korea declared its intention to adopt the “toughest” strategies to counter the United States, citing what it described as an “aggressive military alliance” formed by South Korea, the US, and Japan through intensified military cooperation.
