Slovak PM Warns EU of Severe Impact as Russia Halts Gas Transit Through Ukraine

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico issued a stern warning on Wednesday, stating that the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine would have a significant negative impact on the European Union.

He emphasized that while the EU would suffer from the disruption, Russia would remain largely unaffected. Fico’s remarks come after Gazprom announced that it had halted gas flows due to the expiration of a crucial transit agreement with Ukraine.

The transit deal, which has allowed gas to flow from Russia to Europe through Ukraine for decades, officially expired in the early hours of January 1, 2025. Gazprom confirmed that it lacked the “technical and legal ability” to continue supplying gas via this route after Ukraine refused to extend the agreement.
