Algeria’s Growing Tourism : Ghardaïa Shines as a Top Destination

Algeria’s commitment to promoting its cultural heritage and natural beauty is paying off, as demonstrated by the increasing influx of national and international tourists to Ghardaïa. This surge comes as part of the 2024/2025 Saharan tourism season and coincides with the festive season, reflecting the country’s growing appeal as a prime travel destination.

Ghardaïa, a stunning oasis city located in the heart of Algeria’s M’zab Valley, is experiencing a notable rise in tourism thanks to a concerted effort by local authorities and the tourism sector.

According to the local Directorate of Tourism and Handicrafts (DTA), the region is witnessing a significant influx of visitors, with 33 hotels providing nearly 2,800 beds and 57 dormitories offering an additional 1,450 beds.

Additionally, various social institutions, including rest centers for veterans and workers from state companies like Sonelgaz and the postal services, are contributing to the accommodation offerings. This diversified accommodation network ensures that Ghardaïa is well-equipped to welcome a wide range of tourists.

A key highlight of Ghardaïa’s tourism appeal is the “Tourism chez l’habitant” initiative, which offers visitors the chance to stay in homes with traditional local architecture. This approach not only provides a more authentic experience but also showcases the region’s cultural and architectural heritage.

Visitors are drawn not only to the beauty of the area but also to its deep historical roots, with the local architecture offering a unique glimpse into the area’s rich history.

Tourism agencies play a crucial role in promoting the region, organizing tours that explore Ghardaïa’s ancient ksour (fortified cities) and natural wonders. With an emphasis on both cultural heritage and natural landscapes, these tours provide a comprehensive experience of the area’s uniqueness.

In addition, the tourism sector has been making efforts to facilitate access for foreign tourists. This includes the issuance of 769 tourist visas through the digital platform “Idarati,” a dramatic increase compared to the previous season. This progress indicates the growing appeal of Algeria as a destination for international travelers.

To ensure that tourists are welcomed in the best conditions, the DTA has been proactive in inspecting hotels, residences, and other facilities. With 124 inspections conducted, authorities are committed to maintaining high standards in hospitality, making sure that visitors enjoy both the region’s beauty and the quality of service.

Ghardaïa is not just a destination—it is a testament to Algeria’s efforts to boost domestic and international tourism. With its unique architecture, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, the city stands as a symbol of Algeria’s growing prominence in the global tourism industry.
