China Rejects US Cyberattack Accusations Against Treasury as Groundless

China on Tuesday dismissed US accusations that it was behind a cyberattack targeting the US Treasury Department, calling the claims “groundless” and lacking evidence. The breach, which occurred earlier in December, reportedly allowed remote access to some of the department’s workstations.

The US Treasury stated that the attack resulted from a compromised third-party cybersecurity service provider, which allowed the attacker to gain remote access to workstations and unclassified documents. In response, China’s foreign ministry firmly denied the allegations, emphasizing Beijing’s longstanding opposition to hacking and the spread of false information aimed at politically undermining China.

The Treasury Department has been working with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to assess the damage and has taken the compromised service offline. While the Treasury has not disclosed full details of the breach, it indicated that the incident was linked to a China-based Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor. The department assured that there was no evidence suggesting continued access to its systems.
