Canadian Finance Minister Resigns Amid Disagreements Over Trump’s Economic Policies

Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government due to disagreements over how the country should prepare for the incoming administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, a move that could trigger a political shakeup in Canada.
According to Bloomberg, Freeland, who has been one of the most influential figures in Trudeau’s government for years, also served as Deputy Prime Minister. After Trump’s election victory, Freeland was appointed to lead a cabinet group tasked with developing a strategy for responding to U.S. policies.
In a post on social media, Freeland announced her resignation on Monday, stating that she and the prime minister “disagreed on the best way forward for Canada.” In her resignation letter, which came just hours before she was due to present a financial and economic update in Parliament, Freeland criticized Trump’s “aggressive economic nationalism,” including his threat to impose a 25% tariff on goods coming from Canada and Mexico. Such a move, she warned, could have a devastating impact on Canada’s economy.
This resignation comes at a time when tensions between Canada and the U.S. are expected to rise with the implementation of Trump’s policies, leaving the future of Canada’s economic strategy uncertain.
