Cyclone Chido in Mozambique: Death Toll Rises to at Least 34

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management of Mozambique reported on Tuesday that at least 34 people have died due to the effects of Cyclone Chido, which brought strong winds and heavy rainfall to the region.
The cyclone previously devastated the French archipelago of Mayotte on Saturday before making landfall in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado on Sunday, resulting in 28 fatalities, according to the institute.
In addition, three deaths were confirmed in the province of Nampula, along with another three in Niassa province, which is situated inland. Earlier provisional reports indicated at least three fatalities in northern Mozambique on Sunday.
Cyclone Chido struck the coastal provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado early Sunday, damaging buildings and disrupting electricity supply in certain areas. Before reaching Mozambique, Cyclone Chido had already caused significant destruction in Mayotte, located in the Indian Ocean.
