Malouf: A Bridge to the International Scene (Artists)

The classical music of Malouf serves as “another bridge for Constantine, capable of establishing connections to the international stage,” according to foreign artists participating in the 12th International Cultural Festival of Malouf, which is set to conclude on Wednesday evening.

This latest edition of the festival, which opened on Saturday at the Ahmed Bey Hall (Zénith) in Constantine, showcased how this Andalusian music from the ancient city resonates with diverse accents and tones across Asia and Europe. Japanese artist Nahomi Koyasu pleasantly surprised the audience by performing excerpts of Malouf during the opening night.

A fan of Arabic singing, Koyasu expressed her admiration for Constantine’s Malouf, which features soft, elegant, and emotional refrains that have inspired her interest in this musical genre, considered a variant of Arab-Andalusian music. She aims to foster connections between the Algerian and Japanese peoples through this classical music, which adapts easily across cultures.

Additionally, members of the Algerian-Russian-Syrian troupe “Tarab,” renowned for their interpretation of Andalusian songs, shared their commitment to promoting this Arabic music on the Russian stage through concerts held in Russia.
