On Monday evening in Addis Ababa, Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, officially launched the campaign for Algeria’s candidate for the position of Vice-President of the African Union (AU) Commission, Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi. This event occurred during his official visit to Ethiopia as a special envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
During the ceremony organized by the Algerian Embassy in Addis Ababa, which was attended by numerous members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the AU and senior officials from the continental organization, Attaf emphasized that “Ambassador Haddadi’s candidacy for the elections scheduled for next February reflects President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to enhancing Algeria’s contribution to strengthening collective African action aimed at achieving peace, stability, and development goals on the continent.”
According to Attaf, this candidacy is rooted in Algeria’s strong desire to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the AU’s governance, addressing the various challenges facing the African continent while building on recent achievements. These include the AU’s acceptance as a permanent member of the G20, the establishment of the principle of “African ownership” in peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations on the continent, and the increasing recognition by the international community of the legitimacy of claims addressing historical injustices suffered by Africa within the UN Security Council. There has also been positive responsiveness to calls for equitable representation of African countries in international financial and banking organizations.
This meeting provided an opportunity for Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi to present the key pillars of her program to representatives of the member states of the continental organization. She outlined the various components of her ambitious vision for the future of financial and administrative management at the AU Commission, aligning with the highest standards of effective management, drawing on her extensive diplomatic experience and profound understanding of African affairs.
