Moldova Declares State of Emergency Amid Energy Crisis

Moldova’s parliament has approved a state of emergency for 60 days starting December 16 to address a worsening energy crisis. The decision, backed by 56 lawmakers, was announced by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu following a Thursday session.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who also serves as acting Minister of Energy, emphasized the necessity of the measure during a government meeting on Wednesday. He explained that the crisis demands urgent and coordinated efforts to ensure energy stability for the country.
This move comes as Moldova faces significant challenges in its energy sector, which have been exacerbated in recent months. The state of emergency grants the government additional powers to implement measures to secure energy supplies and manage the crisis effectively.
Moldova has been grappling with growing electricity shortages, raising concerns about its energy security as the winter season intensifies.
