The Algerian kickboxing team, comprising both men and women, delivered an outstanding performance at the African Championships held in South Africa from December 9 to 12, amassing a total of 19 medals: 11 gold, 7 silver, and 1 bronze. The event featured 600 athletes representing 15 countries.
As a result of this remarkable achievement, the national team, made up of 16 athletes, secured second place in the overall standings, while South Africa topped the rankings with a staggering total of 362 medals (139 gold, 154 silver, and 69 bronze). Mauritius finished in third place with 18 medals (10 gold, 7 silver, and 1 bronze).
In a statement to APS, national coach Mustapha Fellak expressed that the results achieved by the Algerian kickboxers were “very satisfactory,” particularly noting Belkis Mechraoui’s qualification (60 kg) for the 2025 World Games in China.
“We rose to the challenge despite limited preparation. Our team managed to secure first place overall,” he added.
In addition to its contingent of sixteen athletes, Algeria was represented in South Africa by three international referees: Allal Sahnoun and El Khir Dilmi for the men’s events, along with Linda Yamani for the women’s.
It is important to mention that qualification for the 2025 World Games in Point Fighting was determined across six weight categories: -63 kg, -74 kg, and -84 kg for men, and -50 kg, -60 kg, and -70 kg for women.
In the K1 category, the selected weight classes included 63.5 kg, -75 kg, and +91 kg for men, as well as -52 kg, -60 kg, and -70 kg for women.
