Top 5 Nuclear Powers Convene to Discuss Nuclear Doctrines

Representatives from the five nuclear-armed nations—the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China—met recently under China’s chairmanship to discuss key nuclear doctrines. The meeting, held on December 4, was described as “frank” by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The gathering followed the recent escalation in Ukraine’s conflict, particularly the use of ATACMS missiles, which prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to authorize an updated nuclear doctrine.

This new doctrine outlines Russia’s conditions for deploying its nuclear weapons, including responses to conventional military strikes and situations where a nuclear-armed state supports a non-nuclear country.

The discussions among the five nuclear powers are seen as crucial in shaping future global nuclear policies and ensuring security amidst rising tensions.
