Italy: Two Dead and Three Missing in Fuel Depot Fire

A fire that erupted on Monday at a fuel depot in Tuscany, central Italy, has claimed two lives, left three individuals missing, and resulted in 26 injuries, according to regional authorities.
As of Monday evening, the preliminary report indicated two fatalities, three missing persons, and 26 injured, as confirmed by the prefecture.
A five-kilometer exclusion zone has been established around the site, with residents advised to remain indoors to minimize exposure to smoke.
The fire was ignited by an “explosion,” as stated earlier by Eugenio Giani, the president of the Tuscany region, via Telegram. According to a statement from Eni, the blaze was contained to a loading area associated with the Livorno refinery and did not pose a threat to the entire storage facility.
Civil protection authorities have urged local residents to close their doors and windows.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the causes of the fire and assess its environmental and health implications.
Experts have been dispatched to the scene to evaluate pollution risks, including potential impacts on nearby water bodies, according to Giani.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences to the families of the victims in a government statement.
