Han Dong-hoon Vows to Block Impeachment of President Yoon Amid Crisis

South Korea’s political landscape is in turmoil as the ruling People Power Party, led by Han Dong-hoon, scrambles to counter a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol. The impeachment, initiated by the opposition Democratic Party, is set for a vote on Saturday.
Han has pledged to prevent the motion from passing, warning of “unprepared chaos” that could harm the public and party supporters.
The crisis escalated after President Yoon declared martial law late Tuesday, citing the need to “purge pro-North Korean forces” and safeguard the liberal constitutional order.
This drastic move followed the opposition’s push to impeach several of Yoon’s high-ranking officials, which he claimed risked political paralysis. However, the declaration was swiftly overturned by a unanimous parliamentary vote, underscoring growing dissent within South Korea’s legislature.
The fallout has left the ruling party divided, with Han simultaneously urging Yoon to resign from the party. The standoff highlights deep fractures in South Korean politics, raising concerns about stability as the country grapples with its most significant political crisis in recent years.
