Japan’s Unemployment Rate Rises to 2.5% in October 2024

Japan’s unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points from the previous month, reaching 2.5% in October 2024. This marks the first increase in three months, according to data released by the Japanese government on Friday.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications reported a 0.2% rise in the total number of employed individuals, which reached 67.98 million after a decline in September. Concurrently, the number of unemployed people increased by 1.8%, totaling 1.71 million, also representing the first uptick in three months.
In addition, separate government data revealed that the job-to-job seeker ratio improved to 1.25 in October, up from 1.24 the previous month, indicating there were 125 job openings for every 100 job seekers.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare noted that new job offers in the academic research and technical services sector climbed by 8.9% compared to the previous year, while new opportunities in the hospitality and food service sector experienced a decline of 6.5%.
