France’s Shift on ICC Warrant Sparks Criticism Over “Netanyahu Immunity”

France has faced backlash from human rights organizations after announcing it would not enforce the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The decision, citing Netanyahu’s immunity due to Zionist entity’s non-membership in the ICC, marks a notable departure from France’s initial stance of adhering to the court’s statutes. Critics argue this shift prioritizes diplomatic ties over accountability for war crimes.
Rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have condemned France’s move, describing it as undermining international justice. They emphasize that ICC warrants apply regardless of official status and warn that granting immunity sets a dangerous precedent. France’s declaration coincided with a ceasefire brokered in Lebanon, which some see as influencing its softened position.
This development has heightened scrutiny of Europe’s collective response to the ICC warrant. While the EU urges member states to respect the court’s rulings, France’s decision raises concerns about the balance between international law and political alliances, particularly as global powers like the G7 deliberate on a unified stance.
