Algeria Accelerates Bechar-Gara Djebilet Railway Project for Early Completion

ALGIERS – The Algerian Agency for the Study and Monitoring of Railway Investment Projects (ANESRIF) is committed to delivering the Bechar-Gara Djebilet (Tindouf) Railway line Project before the contractual deadline, in favor of the “accelerated pace” of the works being implemented as part of the project, said the agency’s official.

In a statement to APS, as part of the agency’s participation in the 20th International Public Works Exhibition (November 24-27), communication director at ANESRIF, Abdelkader Mazar, said that “the project, spanning 950 km, will be delivered ahead of the contractual deadline set for March 2026.”

In this regard, Mazar said that the companies in charge of the project have “almost” completed the clearance of the routes and earthworks, thus allowing the laying of tracks to begin across the three segments.

Innovative earthmoving techniques were employed for this purpose, he added.

This marks “the first production in Algeria of prestressed concrete sleepers. These sleepers, each measuring 2.6 meters, can support loads of up to 32.5 tons and accommodate trains up to 2.5 km long.”

The production capacity of these sleepers reaches 5,400 units per day, distributed across four production units belonging to the companies “Infrarail,” “Infrafer,” and “Cosider,” each producing 800 sleepers per day, in addition to a unit of the Chinese company CRCC, which manufactures 3,000 sleepers per day.

The first segment, 200 km long, connects Bechar to the borders of the Béni Abbès province and is being carried out by a consortium of public enterprises.

The second segment, 175 km long, linking Oum El Assel to Tindouf, has also been entrusted to another consortium of public enterprises.

The third segment, 575 km long, is being handled by a consortium led by the Chinese company CRCC. This segment is divided into two parts: from the 200 km marker to Oum El Assel (440 km) and from Tindouf to Gara Djebilet (135 km).

Furthermore, Mazar mentioned the High Plateaux line project, which extends from Tébessa (in the east) to Sidi Bel Abbès (in the west).

The majority of the sections of this line have been completed, and the last section, linking Tissemsilt to western Tiaret, was recently launched,” he said.

Regarding the Touggourt-Hassi Messaoud line (oil field), 154 km long, the work is progressing “considerably,” he added, noting that this project, equipped with modern stations in Touggourt, the new city of Hassi Messaoud, and the oil hub of Hassi Messaoud (Ouargla province), will be delivered “soon.”
