Eastern DRC: SADC Mission Mandate Extended for One Year

The extraordinary summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has decided to extend the mandate of the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) for an additional year to continue efforts aimed at stabilizing the eastern region of the country, which is currently experiencing violence.
This decision was made on Wednesday during the summit held in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe.
In renewing this mandate, SADC expressed its “concern over the rising levels of violence” and reaffirmed its support for the Congolese government in its endeavors “to restore lasting peace,” according to a statement released following the meeting.
Established in December 2023, SAMIDRC aims to assist the DRC in addressing instability caused by the resurgence of armed groups in the eastern part of the country.
