Hungarian FM Warns of Global Conflict Risk Amid Reports of Western Weapons for Ukraine

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto expressed concern on Monday that the West, particularly Brussels and Washington, could escalate the conflict in Ukraine, potentially spreading it globally. He criticized what he described as the “pro-war mainstream” in both cities for what he sees as a desperate attempt to continue the conflict by authorizing Ukraine to use long-range weapons against Russian territory.
Szijjarto’s comments followed a report by The New York Times revealing that President Joe Biden had authorized Ukraine to use U.S. long-range missiles to strike Russian territory, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy. It was reported that Ukraine would likely carry out the first strikes using ATACMS missiles. Similarly, French and UK authorities were also said to have given Ukraine permission to use their long-range weapons against Russia, though Le Figaro later removed this information.
The possibility of Western powers becoming directly involved in the Ukraine conflict has raised alarms, with Russian President Vladimir Putin warning that such actions could fundamentally change the nature of the war. He indicated that Russia would respond decisively to any direct involvement, viewing it as an escalating threat.
