Xi Jinping Calls for Multi-Polar World at G20 Summit in Brazil

Upon his arrival in Rio de Janeiro for the 19th G20 Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of fostering an equal and inclusive multi-polar world and advancing economic globalization that benefits all nations. In a written statement, Xi expressed hope for the G20 to continue serving as a vital platform for international economic cooperation. This summit marks the historic inclusion of the African Union as a full member, amplifying the voice of the Global South in global governance.
President Xi highlighted the theme set by Brazil, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” aligning it with China’s vision for mutual respect, sustainable development, and support for developing nations. He reaffirmed China’s backing of Brazil’s proposed Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and emphasized the G20’s role in addressing challenges like inequality, hunger, and climate change. Brazilian officials echoed this sentiment, praising China’s contributions to solutions for global issues and celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Beyond the summit, Xi’s visit to Brazil underscores the strengthening of bilateral ties as he and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva plan to engage in discussions on shared priorities. Brazil is the second stop on Xi’s Latin American tour, which also included Peru, where he participated in the APEC summit and met with U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss key global and bilateral matters.
