Philippines: Super Typhoon Man-Yi set to weaken as it sweeps through the country

MANILA – Super Typhoon Pepito (Man-yi) swept across the Philippines’ main island of Luzon on Sunday, carrying heavy rain to the capital region, Metro Manila. The storm triggered over a million evacuations and caused significant damage to buildings in several areas.
Packing winds of 185 kph (115 mph), the typhoon slightly weakened after making landfall in Panganiban, a town in Catanduanes province, on Saturday night. By 8 a.m. Sunday, it had moved over the coastal waters of Camarines Norte province, according to weather officials.
Civil defence reported no casualties despite the strong winds that damaged homes, schools, and commercial buildings in Catanduanes.
The sixth tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines in a month, Man-yi is expected to “significantly” weaken after passing over mainland Luzon on Sunday, according to state weather agency PAGASA.
