Russia-Africa Ministerial Conference Calls for Full Decolonization and Western Sahara’s Right to Self-Determination

ALGIERS – The inaugural Ministerial Conference of the Africa-Russia Partnership Forum, held on November 9-10 in Sochi, Russia, underscored the need to bring Africa’s decolonization process to its full completion.
The conference’s wrapping up joint statement noted that African countries and the Russian Federation share a common determination to complete Africa’s decolonization process under United Nations (UN) oversight and in line with UN Charter provisions.
African countries and Russia doubled down on their responsibility to build a just and stable World Order rooted in UN principles — particularly highlighting peoples’ right to self-determination as enshrined in resolution 1514 on “granting independence to colonial countries and peoples.”
This shared African-Russian stance bolsters the international community’s consensus on the need to allow the people of Western Sahara — Africa’s last remaining colony — to exercise their inalienable and imprescriptible right to self-determination.
