Algerian rowing team wins nine medals on day 1 of 2024 African Rowing Championship

CAIRO – The Algerian rowing team won nine medals (1 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze) on the first day of the 2024 African Rowing Championship, which includes both classic and beach rowing events (junior, U23, and senior categories) taking place in El Alamein, Egypt (Nov 8-11), according to the Algerian Federation of Rowing and Canoe-Kayak Societies (FASACK).

The only gold medal for Algeria on this first day was won by Sabria Boukhous in the lightweight single sculls (U23) event.

The five silver medals were earned by Lahlou Yacine (lightweight single sculls/U23), Abdelhamed Naïdjia and Difallah Aïssani (lightweight double sculls/juniors), Abdenour Zouad and Seïf-Eddine Guennouche (heavyweight double sculls/seniors), as well as the senior women’s quad crew, consisting of Feriel Zitouni, Sabria Boukhous, Amora Sebouh, and Chaïma Hellal Berouane.

The bronze medals were claimed by Feriel Zitouni (heavyweight single sculls/U23), Zakaria Gasmi and Mohamed Chérif Boukhous (heavyweight single sculls/U23), as well as Mohamed Boucif Belhadj (lightweight single sculls/seniors).

With a team of 17 rowers (12 men and 5 women), the Algerian delegation had a productive opening day at the African event in Cairo, which took place on Friday. Their goal is to finish on the podium in both classic and beach rowing events, which are being held in Africa for the first time, according to national coach Ryadh Garidi.

In addition to host country Egypt and Algeria, this continental event, the first of its kind in this sport, features the participation of nine other countries in the classic rowing competition: Tunisia, Libya, Namibia, Benin, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Morocco, and Sudan.
