Spain’s Government Declares Three Day of National Mourning

The Spanish government announced on Wednesday a three-day national mourning period in response to the floods that have claimed at least 64 lives in southeastern Spain, according to the latest estimates.

This mourning will commence on Thursday, October 31, and will continue until Saturday, November 2, as stated by Angel Victor Torres, the Minister of Territorial Policy. He also noted that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez plans to visit the affected areas on Thursday.

Earlier reports had indicated 62 fatalities due to the flooding that struck southeastern Spain. Among the municipalities most severely impacted are L’Alcudia in the Valencia region and Letur in the neighboring province of Albacete (Castile-La Mancha), where six individuals are reported missing after sudden flooding inundated streets and swept away vehicles.

“There are still access difficulties to certain locations, which means we do not yet have complete data on the impact” of the severe weather, warned King Felipe VI of Spain in a brief address. The monarch expressed his “devastation” in a message shared on social media earlier in the morning.
