Algeria and China Discuss Expanding Cooperation in Nuclear technologies

ALGIERS – A delegation from the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), led by the company’s Vice-President Qiao Gang was received at the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines to discuss prospects of the development of Algeria-China cooperation in nuclear technologies used in medicine, said the Ministry in a statement.

The Chinese delegation was received by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Abdelkrim Aouissi, in the presence of the Atomic Energy Commissioner, Abdelhamid Mellah, and Ministry executives.

Discussions focused on “the development of Algeria-China cooperation, particularly in the use of nuclear technologies in medicine and diagnostic imaging procedures,” the same source said.

The two parties also referred to “ongoing discussions on the implementation of a project to produce radiopharmaceuticals for use in the fight against cancer, at the Birine National Atomic Research Center (CNRB) in Djelfa, within the framework of directing investment towards nuclear techniques and applications for medical use.”

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss “the state of cooperation relations between the Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) and the CNNC, in the field of nuclear energy and its active and passive uses for peaceful purposes, as well as the prospects of developing this cooperation.”

The two sides also discussed the results of exchanges between members of the working group comprising experts from COMENA and CNNC, aimed at drawing up a clear action plan for cooperation, based on current uses of nuclear science, techniques and applications in the medical field and the fight against cancer in Algeria.

The two parties explored the areas offering opportunities for the exchange of expertise and solutions to common interests, through the creation of multidisciplinary working groups in the sector of nuclear energy and its active and passive uses for peaceful purposes.
