“It would be up to the UNSC to make decisions on UNIFIL,” Borrell says

NAPLES, Italy – The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Saturday at the meeting of G7 defence ministers that the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon could be strengthened following the Zionist forces’ attacks against the peacekeepers, aiming to expel them from the region.

“U.N. forces have to be respected all over the world… maybe the mission of UNIFIL has to be reviewed, but the first thing to do is a ceasefire,” Borrell said, adding it would be up to the United Nations’ Security Council to make decisions on UNIFIL.

In parallel, four people, including the mayor of a nearby village, were martyred in a Zionist strike on a locality in eastern Lebanon on Saturday, reported the Lebanese news agency.

The mayor of the village of Sohmor, located in the western Bekaa Valley, is the second municipal mayor to be martyred since the start of the Zionist escalation against Lebanon on September 23.

The Zionist entity has expanded the scope of the genocide it has been committing in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to include most regions of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, through air raids and a ground incursion into the southern areas.
