On Wednesday, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune delivered a message to the Algerian people in commemoration of National Migration Day, which marks the 63rd anniversary of the demonstrations of October 17, 1961. Below is the full text:

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and peace and blessings be upon the noblest of messengers.

Dear citizens,

As we commemorate the 63rd anniversary of National Migration Day (October 17), we honor the struggles of our expatriate community, reflecting the solidarity of Algerian men and women residing in France with our glorious liberation revolution. This day holds a significant place in our collective memory, symbolizing the unity of our people rallying around the objectives outlined in the immortal November 1st Declaration. It serves as a powerful reminder of our community in France embracing the revolutionary movement aimed at liberating Algeria from colonial domination and the delusions of settlers who sought paradise at the expense of our people and the rightful owners of our sacred land.

The tragic scenes at the subway stations and bridges over the Seine River in Paris, preserved in documented archives, bear witness to the hatred, bloodshed, and racism of colonialism during those chaotic moments devoid of any sense of civilization and humanity. These events affirm the profound bond among the children of our beloved homeland.

On this occasion, I solemnly remember the souls of the victims of that fateful day and pay tribute to the sons and daughters of Algeria living abroad. I reaffirm the state’s unwavering commitment to defending their rights, safeguarding their interests, and creating optimal conditions for their integration into the national renewal and reform process. We are dedicated to steering Algeria toward a future infused with renewed vision, confident in the nation’s capabilities, the awareness of its youth, and the people’s understanding of the challenges ahead. We firmly believe in overcoming obstacles and fulfilling the dreams of our noble martyrs for an Algeria that stands tall—a nation marked by patriotism and dignity—upholding the principles of justice and fairness regarding the historical narrative that extremist circles attempt to distort or push into the shadows of oblivion. Now more than ever, we need a fresh approach characterized by courage and integrity to navigate the burdens of our colonial past and progress into a future free from the whispers of hatred and animosity propagated by those still shackled to outdated colonial ideologies.

Long live Algeria!

Eternal glory to our valiant martyrs.

Peace and mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.”
