Algeria Calls for Balancing Technology Access with Nuclear Non-Proliferation Efforts

Algeria has urged the UN Security Council to establish a fair balance between combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

“We must find an appropriate equilibrium between the necessity of utilizing nuclear technologies for socio-economic development and the imperative to protect the world from their misuse. The right to employ these technologies and equipment for peaceful purposes must be clearly reaffirmed,” emphasized Algeria’s representative during the proceedings of Committee 1540, which was established to implement the resolution addressing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

In this context, the Algerian representative underscored the importance of international cooperation to ensure the effective implementation of Resolution 1540, adopted by the Security Council in 2004. He urged the international community to assist in enhancing the economic capacities of developing countries through funding initiatives aimed at bridging the technological gap.

Algeria also highlighted the necessity for global coordination to ensure the successful application of this resolution, which seeks to “make the world safer and prevent weapons of mass destruction from falling into the wrong hands.”

The diplomat elaborated on Algeria’s commitment to guaranteeing the implementation of this resolution, to which it contributed during the drafting process. He mentioned various measures, including strengthening the country’s legislative framework to “criminalize activities related to weapons of mass destruction.”

Additionally, actions have been taken at the border surveillance level “to prevent the trafficking of sensitive equipment and technologies,” alongside training for customs and security personnel to effectively enforce measures aimed at enhancing compliance with the Security Council resolution.

Furthermore, the speaker reaffirmed “Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the implementation” of the Security Council resolution, calling for improved collaboration between Committee 1540 and regional organizations “to achieve a harmonized level of implementation across different regions” of the world.
