Algeria’s Council of the Nation Participates in African Senates Colloquium

A delegation from the Algerian Council of the Nation will attend the African Senates Colloquium on October 10 and 11 in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire. The event is themed “The Idea of Senate and the Senatorial Experience in Africa,” according to a press release from the upper chamber of Parliament issued on Wednesday.

“Appointed by the President of the Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, Senator Mouloud M’barek Flouti, along with Senator Brahim Ghouma, will represent the President at the Colloquium in the Ivorian capital, which will host 20 delegations from bicameral parliaments across Africa.”

“The Ivorian Senate is organizing this event, which will address various aspects of parliamentary bicameralism, including concepts, experiences, organization, performance, challenges, and opportunities, as well as prospects for the future of this system in Africa. Additionally, it will highlight the experiences of certain African countries in consolidating bicameralism and strengthening their legislative assemblies through a second chamber,” the source noted.

The meeting aims “to emphasize the effectiveness of parliamentary bicameralism in enhancing democratic practices, legislation, and governance,” the document specified, mentioning that the event will conclude with “the announcement of the establishment of the League of African Senates and the adoption of its specific statute project.”

Furthermore, the Colloquium will provide an opportunity to showcase “Algeria’s experience in parliamentary bicameralism, as enshrined in the Constitution, highlighting its contribution to promoting democratic practices through its representative dimension and its role in enhancing the efficiency and stability of the modern Algerian state’s institutional development,” the document concluded.
