African School Games 2025: Algeria to Host the Inaugural Edition

Algeria will host the inaugural edition of the African School Sports Games from July 5 to 13, 2025. This event will bring together young athletes from across the continent to foster camaraderie, healthy competition, and the promotion of Olympic values, as announced by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).

This significant initiative is the result of a collaboration between ANOCA and the International School Sport Federation (ISF), aimed at identifying and nurturing future sporting talents in Africa. “This first edition, organized with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), seeks to guide young African athletes towards the Los Angeles and Brisbane Olympics, marking a pivotal moment for African sports,” stated ANOCA.

The preparations for the 2025 African School Sports Games gained momentum with the signing of a cooperation agreement between ANOCA and ISF last July during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. “This historic agreement signifies a strategic partnership for the future of school sports in Africa, focused on enhancing the capabilities of young Africans through sport and education by developing structured programs that integrate athletic competition with academic training,” emphasized the African organization.

Beyond being merely a sports competition, the African School Sports Games serve as a vital platform for youth in Africa, especially for promising talents looking to excel on the international stage. These games aim to improve the identification of young athletes and prepare them for major upcoming competitions, notably the African Youth Games scheduled for December 2025 in Luanda, Angola, and the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

For ANOCA, this partnership with ISF aims to establish school sports as a cornerstone in the development of African youth. “Sport is a powerful vehicle, not only for identifying future champions but also for instilling core values such as respect, teamwork, and discipline in our youth. Through this agreement, we are ushering in a new era for school sports in Africa,” declared ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf during the signing ceremony.

Meanwhile, ISF President Laurent Petrynka remarked that “sport begins at school, and it is there that we must direct our efforts to secure a bright future for African youth. The African School Sports Games will serve as a crucial foundation for building a robust and sustainable sports ecosystem.”

According to the continental body, “these African Games will enhance the training of teachers and coaches, particularly in physical education, by equipping them with modern tools and methodologies to encourage sports engagement among young people.” They added that “by investing in school sports, African governments are fostering an environment conducive to developing youth and cultivating future champions.”

In conclusion, the African School Sports Games 2025 represent a landmark event for African youth, signaling a decisive turning point in the history of school sports on the continent. They pave the way for a new generation of sporting talents and strengthen connections between African nations through sport and education.
