A3+ Group Calls for Security Council Reform to Enhance Peace and Security in Africa

NEW YORK (United Nations) – The A3+ group (Algeria, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, and Guyana) called from New York for Security Council reform, stressing that the real value of the UN/African Union (AU) partnership will be achieved when Africa is represented with equal rights and duties in this body.”
The A3 group confirms that it is deeply convinced of the true value of the UN/African Union partnership,” said Sierra Leone’s representative to the United Nations, Michael Imran Kanu, in a speech delivered on behalf of the A3+ group on Wednesday evening during a Security Council meeting on cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations for ma international peace and security.
This value “will only be achieved when the African continent is represented with equal rights and responsibilities within this body through the long-overdue reform process of the Security Council.”
The diplomat further emphasized “the importance of the work done by Africans and for Africans in line with the principles of African solutions to African challenges.”
“Despite significant challenges, the African Union has consistently been able to address the threats facing the continent, whether through mediation efforts or peace support operations.”
Referring to the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, Kanu said that “it is crucial to ensure that Africa’s peace and security plan is supported by the necessary resources to continue preserving the continent’s security landscape.”
