Rwandans head to the polls to elect members of the Senate

KIGALI – Rwandans went to the polls on Monday to elect members of the Senate, the upper house of the country’s parliament, according to media reports.
The Rwandan Senate has 26 seats, including 14 senators elected by specific councils according to administrative entities, eight senators appointed by the president, and four senators from the National Consultative Forum of Political Organisations. Additionally, each of the public and private universities has one seat in the Senate.
NEC Executive Secretary Charles Munyaneza stated that voters would elect twelve senators from Kigali and the country’s provinces on Monday, while representatives of public and private universities would vote on Tuesday.
“In each district, there is a polling station, and we have accredited at least 160 observers to monitor the process,” Mr. Munyaneza told reporters.
Preliminary results are expected to be announced later in the day, according to the official.
