Mpox: Uganda reports ten cases of lethal clade 1b variant

KAMPALA – The number of mpox infections in Uganda has risen to ten cases of the clade 1b variant, which proved to be more lethal and transmissible than the previous strains, a health official said on Saturday.
The first two cases in Uganda were confirmed in July.
“We are happy we have not recorded any fatality so far, and we’re confident we’ll beat the outbreak,” Henry Kyobe, the head of the government’s mpox response effort, told Reuters.
The emergence of the new variant, clade 1b, and its high fatality and transmissibility rate in certain regions of Africa have raised significant alarm among scientists. Consequently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared it a public health emergency of international concern.
