Algeria: AEC receives first shipment of Japanese pumps for construction of major seawater desalination plants

The Algerian Energy Company (AEC), a subsidiary of the Sonatrach Group, received its first shipment of pumps from Japan on Friday at Houari-Boumediene International Airport, destined for the operation of four major seawater desalination plants.

These plants include those in Cap Djenet (Boumerdès), El Taref, Bejaia, and Fouka (Tipaza), all of which are part of a national complementary program to build four major seawater desalination plants, in addition to the one in Oran.

The first phase of receiving this key equipment started on Friday and will continue until September 26. This operation is part of the program to shore up water security through seawater desalination by constructing five major seawater desalination plants with a production capacity of 1.5 million cubic meters per day “in record time.”

In line with Sonatrach directives, AEC has initiated an air bridge involving ten flights to supply these projects with the necessary equipment and materials to expedite the completion of the program’s final phase, according to AEC CEO Lotfi Zenadi.

To further accelerate the process, the resort to air freight will allow for delivery within a few days, compared to maritime freight, which could take months.

Tarek Nouizi, CEO of the Algerian Company for the Realisation of Industrial Projects SARPI, stated that the arrival of pumps will enable the start of potable water supply through the four plants by the end of the year.

According to Mammeri Benyoucef, CEO of the National Company for Major Oil Works, the construction progress of the five major seawater desalination plants (Boumerdès, El Taref, Bejaia, Fouka, and Oran) has reached 75%.

The National Company for Major Oil Works (ENGTP), the Algerian Company for the Realisation of Industrial Projects SARPI, the National Pipeline Company (ENAC), and COSIDER Canalisations are all involved in the construction work.
