Energy efficiency : in-depth technical cooperation between Algeria and South Korea

Several meetings between Algeria’s Commissioner for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CEREFE) and South Korean energy efficiency players were organized during a recent study visit. This visit marked a significant milestone for technical cooperation between the two countries. The visit, detailed in a press release by CEREFE, represents a pivotal moment for Algeria’s initiatives in energy and environmental efficiency. It opens the door for future investments in green technologies and sustainable development, paving the way for deepened bilateral relations in these sectors.

The strategic visit took place from August 27 to September 6 and was supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). It included representatives from Algeria’s Environment, Trade, Industry, and Energy sectors. Notably, CEREFE and Algeria’s Laboratoire National d’Essais (LNE) initiated discussions with the Korea Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Assessment Center (KRAAC) to establish a state-of-the-art testing laboratory in Algeria. This laboratory will assess the energy efficiency of air conditioners, marking a key step forward in Algeria’s energy efficiency efforts.

During the visit, the Algerian delegation also toured the Korean Green Hub, a center for environmental innovation, to observe sustainable practices in industrial and urban sectors. Discussions with the Korean Environment Corporation (K-Eco) focused on improving air-quality monitoring and management strategies in Algeria, using South Korea’s successful policies and technological innovations as a model for advancing environmental protection.

CEREFE representatives participated in the prestigious World Climate Industry Expo in Busan, where they attended the opening ceremony alongside Algeria’s ambassador to South Korea, Mohamed Bensabri. At the event, Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Duk-Geun and International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol underscored the importance of global cooperation to tackle climate and energy challenges. Discussions between Algerian and Korean officials further highlighted the need for stronger partnerships to address these critical issues.

The visit also featured the second Algerian-Korean Forum on Energy Efficiency, jointly organized by CEREFE and the Korean Energy Agency (KEA). This forum, aligned with a memorandum of understanding between both agencies, brought together industrial experts and policymakers to discuss sustainable energy practices in high-intensity sectors. Algerian Ambassador Bensabri reiterated Algeria’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, while officials from CEREFE and KEA emphasized the importance of this collaboration in promoting sustainable energy practices in Algeria.
