Sudan: Death Toll From Seasonal Floods Reaches 173

The Sudanese Ministry of Health reported on Thursday that the death toll from flooding, triggered by heavy rains across 11 states since June, has risen to 173.

In a statement, the ministry noted that the excessive rainfall and subsequent flooding have impacted over 170,000 individuals.

It emphasized that the fatalities due to the floods have reached 173, with injuries totaling 505. Moreover, 18,665 homes have been completely destroyed, while an additional 14,947 have sustained partial damage.

Each year, more than 100 people lose their lives, and tens of thousands of homes, workplaces, and agricultural lands are damaged due to flooding during the rainy season, which spans from July to October in Sudan.

The same report also indicated that cholera-related deaths in the country have climbed to 71.

According to the statement, the total number of cholera cases has reached 1,696, prompting the implementation of necessary precautions.

In Sudan, where conflict persists and the healthcare system is severely strained, the spread of epidemic diseases further complicates life for the population.
