Brazil Reports First Suspected Mpox Case at São Paulo Airport

The Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) reported a suspected case of Mpox at São Paulo-Guarulhos airport on Monday.

A passenger displayed symptoms of Mpox infection on Sunday. The individual arrived at the airport on August 14 and was in an asylum seeker’s area. Anvisa did not provide details about the passenger’s country of origin or point of departure.

In a statement, the Brazilian Ministry of Health confirmed that the passenger was isolated and undergoing necessary health protocols.

State-owned infectious disease hospital Emilio Ribas said that the suspected Mpox case is likely chickenpox. They expect laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis in the coming days.

Anvisa screened 397 individuals in the restricted access area, checking temperatures and looking for visible disease signs. No other individuals showed symptoms. Cleaning and disinfection measures were also implemented.

According to the Ministry of Health, Brazil recorded over 700 confirmed Mpox cases this year, none linked to the new variant.
