Flooding and Severe Weather in Bangladesh: 2.9 Million Affected

Approximately 2.9 million people have been affected by flooding from torrential rains in Bangladesh, according to official sources.

“About 2.9 million individuals have been impacted, and over 70,000 have been evacuated to shelters,” stated the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.

At least two fatalities have been reported. Hundreds of thousands remain stranded due to flooding in at least eight low-lying districts in southern and eastern regions.

The army and navy have been deployed with speedboats and helicopters to rescue those trapped by rising river waters.

This South Asian nation, home to 170 million people, has experienced frequent flooding in recent decades. Many areas are deltas where the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers flow into the sea after passing through India.

According to the Global Climate Risk Index, Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. Annual monsoon rains cause significant damage each year, but climate change is intensifying their severity and frequency.
