Arab League Urges International Action for Sudan Crisis

The Arab League has stressed the necessity of international cooperation to resolve the ongoing crisis in Sudan.

In a statement following a meeting between Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, and Tom Perriello, the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, held at the League’s headquarters, it was noted that their discussion centered on the current situation in Sudan and explored ways to end the ongoing crisis. Additionally, they discussed preparations for ceasefire talks scheduled to take place in Switzerland next month.

The Assistant Secretary-General outlined the Arab League’s stance on the Sudanese crisis, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national institutions, preserving the unity of the Republic of Sudan, and ensuring its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He affirmed the League’s readiness to fully engage and provide any necessary support to help Sudan overcome this unprecedented crisis.

For his part, the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan emphasized his commitment to continuous consultation and coordination with the Arab League regarding efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan.

Last week, the United States called on the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces to participate in U.S.-mediated ceasefire talks, set to begin on August 14 in Switzerland. These talks will include regional parties and international organizations and aim to achieve a cessation of violence throughout Sudan, ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and establish a robust monitoring and verification mechanism to guarantee the implementation of any agreement.
